In 2025, Mexico's train ridership reached 55.1 million, a 6.9% increase from the previous year, according to government data. This increase is attributed to the completion of two major new train routes and the success of Mexico City's Suburban Train. The Suburban train, which connects the northern limit of the city with Cuautitlán in México state, contributed 82% of this increase. However, passenger numbers are expected to increase due to the inauguration of the light rail connection from Lechería station to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and the adoption of the recently inaugurated Interurban “Insurgente” Train linking eastern Méxic state with the Observatorio station of the Mexico City Metro. The expansion of Mexico's railways is also set to be announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, with plans to build over 3,000 kilometers of railway track before her term ends in 2030.
