The massive fire broke out on Cortlandt Street in Belleville, New Jersey, on May 3, causing a local state of emergency to be lifted after strong winds spread the flames to warehouses and other buildings. The loss of water pressure also impacted the Belleville school district. One firefighter sustained a minor elbow injury and several others were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has reported that background air quality action levels are below the standard action level and a second round of air quality testing is expected after demolition operations conclude. Students returned to school in time for New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) testing on Tuesday. However, some parents and teachers have expressed frustration over the handling of school closures and relocation decisions in the wake of the fire.
