Pennsylvania lawmakers advance LGBTQ+ protections despite GOP objections

Pennsylvania lawmakers have advanced employment protections for LGBTQ+ and HIV-positive workers in eight bills, supported by equality advocates. The Fairness Act, sponsored by Democrat Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, updates Pennsylvania's anti-discrimination law to prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression in housing, education, and public accommodations. Republicans complained that the bill was advanced with too little discussion and that it was a perversion of God's creation. The committee also advanced a bill eliminating certain parts of Pennsylvania law criminalizing HIV status and making the statute reflect the current scientific understanding of how the virus spreads.
