Orbán’s defeat in Hungary election exposes GOP divide

The defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has caused a rift in the U.S. Republican Party, with some embracing a post-Orbán political shift in Europe and others lamenting the downfall of a prominent right-wing figure with close ties to both President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Trump administration had previously supported Orbán and his nationalist-populist Fidesz party, but failed to secure a fifth consecutive term in power. The loss was a blow to Trump and his populist base, but a boon to European leaders pushing for a strong NATO alliance. In the Senate, some of the president's close allies, including Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), and Sen. Thom Tillis (r-N.C.), both retiring at the end of his term, both congratulated Péter Magyar and his center-right Tisza party.
