Jo Eva Gaines, a pioneering figure in public education, has been awarded the Rhode Island Foundation Black History Month Award. Gaines served as a classroom teacher and Director of Guidance for Middletown Public Schools. She also served on the Newport School Committee and the R.I. Association of School Committees. Additionally, she has served on several advisory boards for education evaluation and funding.
