Measles in N.J. wastewater prompts health alert

New Jersey health officials have issued a health alert after finding measles in a wastewater treatment facility in Newark. The finding indicates at least one person with measles was present in the community, potentially including those traveling through the community. The last confirmed case of measles in New Jersey occurred in October 2025. Despite being declared eliminated in the United States nearly 30 years ago, measles has reemerged due to declining measles, mumps and rubella vaccination coverage. The CDC warns that outbreaks can occur when measles reaches pockets of unvaccinated people.
