The shooting at the White House Correspondents' dinner, which included President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and many other administration officials, led to the evacuation of the Washington Hilton Hotel. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, is believed to have traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then Chicago to Washington, D.C., where he checked into the hotel where the correspondents’ dinner was held. Prior to the shooting, Allen sent his family writings expressing anti-Trump sentiment and his targets were administration officials. No other injuries were reported. The incident occurred during an exchange of gunfire with a Secret Service officer. The Justice Department announced it was dropping its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, which had been critical of the investigation.
