Eli Lilly targets Civil War-era whistleblower law at US Supreme Court

Eli Lilly has filed a petition to the US Supreme Court alleging that the whistleblower provisions of the federal False Claims Act violate the U.S. Constitution by placing too much federal executive power in the hands of individuals not directly accountable to the president. The law, which was introduced in 1863 and strengthened in 1986, allows private individuals to sue on the government's behalf and share in recoveries. A spokesperson for Eli Lilly and attorneys for Ronald Streck and the alleged whistleblower, who brought the lawsuit against Lilly, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
