State Sen. Nick Collins (D-First Suffolk) has demanded an audit of MassDOT contracts for dilapidated highway service plazas, as part of a state committee investigating the Applegreen service plaza deal. Collins has also requested a review of the physical condition of each service plaza, aiming to ensure adequate controls are built into future RFPs and agreements to protect taxpayers and ensure compliance with the state's sanitary code. He highlighted instances where contractors have not met their obligations, including Pan Am Railways, McDonald’s Corporation, and Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) lease of the Pope Island Marina to the New Bedford Port Authority. A public survey has been launched online by Mass DOT for residents and visitors to grade the quality and cleanliness of the specific service plaza they visit.
