A proposed bill in the U.S. Senate, the SAVE Act, would require citizens to present a birth certificate or passport to register to vote. Richard Topper, a trial attorney in Columbus, argues this could prevent thousands of Ohioans from voting, particularly those who move, change their names, or lack access to these documents. Topper argues that as chief election officer of Ohio, Frank LaRose, should focus more on these concerns, as he does to the small number of undocumented citizens who attempt to vote in elections. The SAVE acronym should stand for Suppressive American Votes Everywhere. The act could potentially affect the voting rights of nearly 1.2 million Ohioans in 2023, who moved within or to Ohio.
