The legal clock is closing on for immigration agents to explain why Estefany Rodriguez, a Nashville news reporter, was arrested by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) during a traffic stop on March 4. Rodriguez, who works for local news outlet Nashville Noticias, is currently being held in the Etowah County Jail in northeast Alabama. Her lawyers claim she was arrested without a warrant due to her critical reporting on immigration activity. The arrest has sparked outrage across the state and nation, with First Amendment advocates, lawmakers, and community groups calling for immediate release. A coalition of 41 press freedom and civil liberties organizations, including The Society of Professional Journalists, have called for Rodriguez's immediate release and for an end to the use of immigration authorities to chill free expression and First Amendment rights.
