Stop Thinking: Why Too Much Introspection Hurts Leadership Performance

Introspection is often praised in business and leadership circles, but too much of it can negatively impact leadership performance. A16z co-founder Marc Andreessen recently mentioned that he practices "zero introspection". This statement is counterintuitive for a leader at a high level, as introspection is supposed to be part of the job: review decisions, learn, and improve. However, rumination, which is repetitive, open-ended, emotionally charged, rarely produces a clear resolution, can lead to delayed decisions, disrupted flow, lower performance, and uncertain energy. The author suggests that leaders should separate essential and unnecessary thinking from overthinking.
