India's government proposed in January that firms like Apple, Samsung and Google consider pre-installing its biometric app, Aadhaar, on phones, a move opposed by a group representing smartphone giants. The proposal was opposed by companies concerned that pre-installations raise production costs and create functional issues for users. The pre-installedation of the national ID app, which is linked to a unique 12-digit identity number, was also opposed by the group MAIT, which argued that it would allow citizens to access essential functions without separate downloads and would significantly increase its reach and accessibility. The new version of the Aadar app was launched in January and allows users to update their personal details and manage profiles of their family members.
