Some Chicagoans are choosing not to pay federal taxes in protest against President Trump's policies, including aggressive deportation efforts, support for Israel in the Gaza war in Gaza, and the U.S.-Iran war against Iran. Chicago attorney Rachel Cohen decided to file but not pay her federal taxes, instead putting the owed amount into a high-yield savings account and paying only her state taxes instead. The National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee, which provides training on tax resistance and its consequences, has seen a surge in interest in their movement. The group's social media presence has also increased, with 42,000 followers on Instagram and its website now having about 40,000 unique visitors a year compared to 400,000 last year and 300,000 this year. Consequences for not filing a federal tax return are worse, with a 5% fine attached. Tax protesters could face wage garnishment, property seizures or prison time.
