Nevada families face thousands in out-of-pocket costs after autism therapy coverage changes

Nevada's autism insurance law, which took effect in 2011, requires state-regulated health plans to cover ABA therapy for children with autism under 18. However, major insurance changes are limiting coverage and forcing some families to pay thousands out of pocket. Elina Sverdlova, whose son, who has autism, was in therapy nearly every day and was making real progress when her insurer, the Health Plan of Nevada, limited coverage to ABA therapies, a critical, evidence-based treatment, along with other essential services. The changes have led to Sverevulova's family cutting care significantly, forcing them to cut care. The Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities estimates that an unknown number of autistic children in Nevada have lost access to therapy or are now paying significantly more.
