Social media scammers are stealing real apartment tour videos from Bay Area realtors and reposting them on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The scamsters then lower the rent to attractive prices. These scammers often impersonate the agents themselves, copying their names, headshots, and license information. The problem has grown alongside the rise of social media as a marketing tool. One TikTok account, for_rent_sanfrancisco, attracted nearly 12,000 followers by posting walkthroughs of trendy units near Alamo Square, advertising one-bedroom for as little as $1,800 a month. Other Bay Area agents have been forced to confront the fraud on their own social media pages.
