Parents and educators are warning that the proposed $1.7 billion budget for Boston Public School (BPS) will result in significant cuts to critical services and positions. The revised budget includes a reduction of 568 full time equivalent positions from the general fund and 110 positions from external funding. Many of these positions are currently vacant or will come from planned school closures or consolidations. Critics have raised concerns about the impacts on the hardest-hit positions, including bilingual teachers and aides. The district's superintendent, Mary Skipper, highlighted the complexity of the cuts, noting that while 110 bilingual teachers are being decreased, 33 of the positions are being recoded and the remaining 77 reflect a decline in multilingual learner enrollment. The proposed budget has been revised since February and includes a $2 million increase due to a new bus monitor contract, the restoration of three attendance supervisor positions, and smaller technical changes.
