A group of states that include Nevada, California, and Arizona have proposed a proposal for a short-term solution to the long-running impasse over Colorado River water in the West. The Lower Colorado River Basin states are willing to increase their commitment to stabilizing the river's water supply with a plan that would deliver up to 3.2 million acre-feet of water savings through 2028. This comes after the Upper Colorado River basin states, which includes Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming, called for third-party intervention as they continue talks toward a new Colorado River plan. The proposal comes after record low levels at Lake Mead could potentially halve hydropower production at Hoover Dam as soon as this fall. The implementation of key elements of the proposal will require federal partnership.
