New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed a law lifting restrictions on nuclear power, a move her administration hopes will help address soaring electricity costs. The law removes a requirement that nuclear waste be permanently disposed of in a federal facility, which is not currently possible as there is no such facility. This effectively ends a 40-year ban on new nuclear development in the state. Critics argue that the law ignores unresolved concerns about nuclear waste. Supporters argue that nuclear power provides energy without the air pollution associated with fossil fuels and requires a smaller land footprint than renewable energy sources. The New Jersey Business & Industry Association supports the new law, while critics argue that it uses the language of affordability to justify rolling back environmental protections.
