Spirit Airlines, a low-cost airline, has shut down its operations on May 2, 2026 due to the rising price of jet fuel, causing it to become too costly for the company. All flights were immediately cancelled and customer support was no longer available. The airline's website stated that all flights would be immediately cancelled, and customer service would be limited. This decision leaves thousands of travelers with Spirit flights booked in the coming days and future travel plans disrupted. While some lost funds can be recuperated later through their credit card or a consumer protection agency, travelers are treated as unsecured creditors who will not be reimbursed in liquidation. Following the announcement of the airline's collapse, Frontier Airlines announced it would offer rescue fares for those with disrupted travel.
