Mutant, Immunity-Resistant Virus First Detected In CA Is Spreading

A mutated variant of the COVID-19 virus, named the CO.19 BA.3.2 variant, has spread across the country and has been detected in wastewater samples in California. The variant's makeup is significantly different from previous variants and could potentially bypass immunity from vaccination or prior infection. The first case of the variant was found in 2025 at San Francisco International Airport in a Dutch passenger. The mutation in the spike protein is the primary target of neutralizing antibodies generated from a previous infection.
