Pennsylvania firefighters are urging the state to allow their off-road vehicles to drive on public roads. Currently, they can only drive a vehicle on a public road for two miles, which is better safety compliance than most people achieve on the 405 freeway. The current law prevents these departments from crossing a public highway to respond to an emergency, which can take up to 10 to 15 minutes. The state House Transportation Committee held a hearing on two bills, House Bill 297 and House Bill 2233, which would extend that two-mile road limit for emergency responders. However, Captain Lance Carlen of the Central Bucks Regional Police Department argues that neither bill goes far enough. Additionally, the state currently lacks a mechanism to license off-roads for road use, which could put volunteer firefighters at risk.
