A group of Democratic senators is urging the Federal Commission (FCC) to review Paramount's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery due to its investment from Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds. The senators, led by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), cited a provision of the Communications Act that foreign entities cannot hold more than 25% of the equity or voting interest in a U.S. company without the commission's approval. They also highlighted investments from sovereign wealth Funds from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Abu Dhani, which provided about $24 billion in financing. The Chinese technology company Tencent is reportedly in discussions to invest in the transaction, after withdrawing from earlier concerns about its interest triggering a review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.
