Former NATO commander, James Stavridis, stated that Iran has refused a ceasefire due to its high-value cards, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the possession of nearly 1,000 pounds of enriched uranium. This has led to increased energy prices and decreased oil transport costs. The Strait's closure has also prompted President Trump to issue threats of additional strikes on Iran. As Trump threatens to strike desalination plants and other sites, Stavidis argued that these actions violate international law. Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey have been mediating the ongoing conflict. However, Iran has vowed to defend itself with strikes on nations with U.S. assets until its five conditions for ending the war are met.
