California officials have established a 77-square-mile quarantine in parts of San Diego County after Mexican fruit flies were discovered during a routine inspection. The quarantine affects Spring Valley, Bonita, and the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and San Diego. The California Department of Food and Agriculture is working to contain the infestation, using measures such as releasing sterile male fruit flies and cleaning up properties within 200 meters of the affected areas.
