Canal+’s African Pay-TV Giant MultiChoice Pulls Plug on Streamer Showmax Amid “Unsustainable” Losses

African pay-TV giant, Canal+, has announced the discontinuation of Showmax, set to relaunch in 2024. The decision was made following a comprehensive review of the company's streaming activities and reflects its focus on financial discipline and investment optimization in an increasingly competitive global streaming environment. Despite the substantial annual losses experienced by the Showmax business, MultiChoice stated it will continue investing in premium content for its subscribers and will deploy its in-house large-scale streaming platform.
