Husker researchers develop promising multispecies bird flu vaccine
Published on May 2, 2026.
Researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are developing a new vaccine approach against bird flu, which could potentially protect livestock and potentially reduce risks to humans. The vaccine is designed to protect against multiple strains of the virus while generating immunity in both the bloodstream and respiratory tract. The approach could extend across species including cattle, pigs, sheep and potentially poultry. In preclinical testing, the vaccine produced strong immune responses in mice and dairy calves, with complete protection against severe disease in those models. There is a strong possibility the vaccine could eventually become FDA-approved.
