The crisis in American air travel is acute, with airlines and other airlines experiencing staffing shortages, security delays, and numerous incidents that have left some travelers questioning whether air travel safety is safe. The libertarian minds at the Heritage Foundation and several conservative think tanks have proposed allowing airports to hire private security contractors to handle much of the TSA's work, which is already implemented at around 20 US airports. However, this proposal does not address many other issues, including 80 percent of the country's air traffic control infrastructure being deemed "obsolete" or "unsustainable". The Federal Aviation Administration is also short about 3,000 air traffic controllers, and equipment failures can cause flight delays and cancellations. The Trump administration has launched several initiatives to staff up air control towers and facilities but has also exacerbated the problem by eliminating FAA support staff during cost-cutting spree.
