A political standoff over voter laws could lead to long lines, delays, and a continued federal presence at airports. President Donald Trump has linked the SAVE Act to any deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and fully reopen the government. The bill would tighten federal voting requirements, including requiring proof of citizenship to vote. However, it is currently stalled in the Senate and lacks the votes to proceed. Meanwhile, the partial government shutdown is nearing 40 days old. As long as DHS remains unfunded, TSA officers continue working without pay, raising concerns about staffing, morale, and passenger delays. Arizona Congressman Greg Stanton (D) urged Congress to move forward on the parts of DHS funding not tied to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and leave the ICE dispute for later.
