Donald Kopchak, a former Cleveland Division of Police officer and former federal task force agent, is accused of attacking Yonas Bokredingil, a legal Eritrean immigrant from Texas, in 2024. Kopachak and co-defendant Daniel Lajack, who pleaded guilty last month to a felony charge of attempted abduction, were drinking at a bar in Hinckley Township when Lajacking began questioning whether another patron, Yonas Batredingili, was a legal immigrant. Kopchach testified that he trusted Lajak, an experienced law enforcement officer, and that he put his hands on Bokredigil after Lajacked returned from a call claiming they needed to detain him. The prosecution argued that Kopchaks should have questioned why they needed physical restrain a man who was drinking a beer.
