Airbus has announced that AirAsia will order 150 A220-300s in a new 160-seat cabin configuration for $19 billion, marking the largest order for the aircraft series and pushing its total lifetime order count past 1,000. This move is a significant win for Airbus, which bought Canada's Bombardier eight years ago and renamed the Airbus A220. The A220 is largely built in Canada as part of a joint venture between Airbus and the Government of Québec, which owns 25% of the venture. The order will provide stability for Canada, which is facing setbacks from new tariffs and historical reliance on its neighbor, the US. Despite its length, the A220's biggest drawback is its ability to land at urban hubs with a lighter frame and fuel-efficient engine.
