Private tutoring in Egypt has become a primary engine of academic achievement for many families since the end of the 20th century. While public education in Egypt is free, many students and parents rely on paid classes outside of the classroom for crucial academic progress. The quality of teaching in many public schools' classrooms can limit teachers' ability to provide individual attention. Private tutoring provides clarification, targeted practice, and repetition, which is difficult to deliver within school schedules. This shift has led to a "parallel" education system, running alongside formal schooling and influencing students' outcomes. High-achieving students use private tutoring to gain an edge, while average students and younger learners seek extra support to keep up with the curriculum. The study also suggests that around 75 percent of students in the final year of secondary education were receiving private tutored. In 2025, sessions will cost around EGP 150 (USD 2.80) to EGP 200 (USD 3.73), depending on teacher's reputation and class size.
