Lyric's exhilarating new "Madama Butterfly" flies in the face of orientalism

The Lyric Theatre has produced a new production of "Madama Butterfly," directed by Japanese American Matthew Ozawa and led by a Japanese American female production team. The production, which premiered at the Cincinnati Opera, depicts an American sailor who marries a Japanese teen in Japan before returning to America and drives her to suicide. However, the final act of the opera feels more like liberation than death. The Lyric production also features Korean soprano Karah Son and Evan LeRoy Johnson, making their Lyric debuts.
