Bree "Bree" Schnelle and Steffen Peterson have developed a 15-acre farm near Mayville, Wisconsin, named Pela Farm and Fiber. Their goal is to raise sheep and establish conservation partnerships to create a perennial pasture for their flock. While they are new to farming, both have previous farming experience. The farm was named after Pela because of the heavy clay soil in the area. Managed grazing involves rotating animals into smaller paddocks regularly, depending on the growth of the grass. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s NRCS provides technical assistance and grants to partially cover farmers' costs to implement conservation practices. The couple recently hosted a pasture walk on the farm, with fellow area farmers and Glacierland Resource Conservation and Development.
