Lawmakers are returning to Washington this week amid uncertainty over future pay for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees, including Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers, who have been forced to work without pay. This uncertainty follows a last-minute split between Senate Republicans and House Republicans, which rejected a measure to fund most of DHS. Despite President Trump's executive order directing DHS to retroactively pay TSA employees for work since the shutdown began, uncertainty remains over the future of future pay periods. Without certainty about future paychecks, TSA officers may again be forced to take on second jobs, leaving airports without the staffing needed to keep operations running smoothly. The department has warned employees that their April 10 paycheck could include back pay for time worked during the shutdown through April 4.
