An Alaska Senate committee has introduced a comprehensive crime package, which would raise the age of consent from 16 to 18. The bill, introduced by Democratic Sen. Matt Claman, also a candidate for governor, also includes measures to criminalize the creation of child sex abuse material using artificial intelligence and stiffen penalties for drivers in hit-and-run fatalities. This comes amid controversy over whether the age-of-consent bill should be moved forward as standalone legislation. Advocates for the bill argue that the legislation is crucial to protect older teens from predatory adults. The package also includes a tracking system for sexual assault examination kits and a new crime of organized theft.
