This comes as the ongoing partial government shutdown continues to cause chaos at airports across the country. The filibuster allows the minority party to delay or block bills by stretching out debate, resulting in most legislation needing to reach a 60-vote threshold to pass. However, many Republicans have opposed this idea. The current government shutdown, which began on Feb. 14 due to a dispute over immigration enforcement, is expected to break its record of 43 days unless a deal is reached.
