March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The leading cause of cancer deaths among people under 50 is expected to rise by 90% by 2030. Early screening and lifestyle changes can prevent the disease, not just detect it. The CDC recommends colorectional cancer screenings starting at age 45, and if you have a family history of colorecedal cancer or a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, your physician may recommend starting earlier. The survival rate is over 90% when the disease is diagnosed at Stage I or II, but only 33% of cases are caught at these stages. Smoking, lack of exercise, and diet are all directly linked to the rising rate of early-onset colorectan cancer.
