California Gov. Gavin Newsom was confronted by Google founder Sergey Brin at a treehouse party in December about a proposed tax on billionaires in California, which would hit his $260 billion net worth. The proposed tax, proposed by the SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, would move funding to healthcare and education programs threatened by federal funding cuts. Since then, Brin has vowed to leave California and spend tens of millions on opposing the tax initiative. Newsom also opposes the proposed tax for potentially stifling innovation in exchange for a one-time fix to the state budget.
