Cardiologist Dr. Renato Apolito, a board-certified physician in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease, has been seeing patients for over 20 years. He believes managing a healthy body and maximizing nutritional value of meals is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight and optimizing heart and overall health. Apolitos eats a wide range of meals, including a high-protein breakfast with low-fat milk and egg whites, and a protein-rich lunch with vegetables. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend at least three servings of vegetables a day and an occasional pasta with green vegetables and lean protein. He also enjoys treats like dark chocolate, dark chocolate-covered almonds, dried fruit with ricotta or honey, and high-quality ice cream. Despite this, he acknowledges that living in a society surrounded by unhealthy processed food makes it more difficult to eat whole foods.
