A white van carrying special sensors in Camden, New Jersey, collected toxic air pollution data over two weeks in March. The project is part of a statewide air monitoring project the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is conducting over the next two years to identify hotspots of air pollution in four communities deemed overburdened by environmental and public health stressors. The instruments attached to the van measure planet-warming greenhouse gases, particulate matter, and other pollutants that can exacerbate asthma. The state is focusing on air toxics as they can cause birth defects, cancer or lung irritation.
