NJ school district proposes massive layoffs to close budget gap

The West Orange School District in New Jersey may have to cut 70 or more positions due to a projected $14 to 15 million budget gap. The district's preliminary budget includes a minimum of 70 full-time employee cuts, increased class sizes, consolidated courses, and a restructured middle school schedule. This is not the first time the district has been forced to make such cuts. The rising costs of food, gasoline, electricity, and healthcare have exacerbated this issue, particularly in light of rising healthcare costs. There is a 2% cap on property tax increases and a 6% limit on how much state aid can increase year over year.
