Measles has made a significant comeback in the US, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting over 1,600 measles infections as of April 3, 2026. Last year, the CDC confirmed 2,286 cases for 2025, the highest number since 1991, and the country is already on track to surpass this year's record. The Trump administration has prioritized a review of the country's measles-free status until after the midterm elections. According to the CDC report, 17 new outbreaks were reported in 2026, with 94 percent of confirmed cases being “outbreak-associated” with a majority of cases stemming from outbreaks that started in 2025. Public health experts are concerned that measles infections are becoming endemic and normalized under the Trump administration. The measles vaccine is highly effective, with nearly 99 percent of people protected after two doses.
