The long lines at airports around the country are due to a political dispute between Democrats and Republicans. The Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Carter differ on who is responsible for the airport chaos. Both argue that the Democratic shutdown and Republican counterparts have failed to compromise on funding for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The partial government shutdown began on February 14 and has affected most DHS agencies. Democrats are demanding major reforms to the immigration enforcement activities of ICE, which is also under DHS. Scalise supports the deployment of ICE agents to airports, but Carter opposes this, arguing that they were not trained to be ICE agents.
