The city Department of Transportation (DOT) is planning to redesign a 16-block stretch of Manhattan's Ninth Avenue for the summer FIFA World Cup ahead of the event. The redesign includes adding more pedestrian and bike space, widening the street's protected bike lane, and extending its painted bus lane to 50th Street. The project is expected to be completed by late summer or early fall. The DOT identified Ninth Avenue as a priority corridor under the city's Vision Zero initiative to reduce traffic injuries and crashes. Over the past five years, one person has been killed and 36 others seriously injured along the stretch.
