The Trump administration is reducing its controversial immigration crackdown, which halted hundreds of thousands of applications for asylum after the November shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., and resulted in an indefinite suspension of all asylum requests filed outside of immigration court, regardless of nationality. However, the administration has now decided to lift the asylum adjudication pause for most cases, except for those filed by nationals from countries affected by a travel ban or steep immigration restrictions from a previous proclamation by President Trump. This move allows resources to focus on continued rigorous national security and public safety vetting for higher-risk cases, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The administration has also suspended all other legal immigration applications filed by non-high-risk nationals of the 39 nations listed on the "travel ban" list, which also include African, Somalia and Nigeria, Asian, Iran and Laos, and Latin American countries.
