UNC grad student competent to stand trial, won't face death penalty on charge he killed is professor

The suspect, Tailei Qi, is charged with murdering University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor Zijie Yan in 2023, according to multiple psychiatric evaluations. The state will not seek the death penalty in this case. Until now, Qi was deemed not mentally capable of standing trial due to severe mental illness. He is accused of walking into a campus building and shooting Yan, a graduate student at the time.
