California state officials have approved the installation of 185 speed cameras in seven cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Long Beach, Glendale and Malibu. Currently, only cameras in San Francisco and Oakland have begun issuing tickets. However, Los Angeles has been given the final approval for the plan, with plans to install 125 cameras across the city this summer. The cameras are intended to serve as a pilot program through 2032 to measure the effectiveness of these measures before more speed cameras are installed throughout the state. A study by SFTMA found that speeding decreased by 72% on average at 15 locations after cameras were installed last year, and that the cameras' performance was seen as a significant improvement. A legal battle over federal grant funding has hampered efforts to install cameras in the San Jose area, where plans have been thwarted by the Trump administration.
