The White House wants a single national standard for artificial intelligence, arguing that excessive regulation could hinder American innovation in a global competition with China. However, with no progress in Congress, state lawmakers are struggling to address concerns about the technology that is poised to reshape the economy. There are over 1,000 state legislative proposals addressing AI, with some popular ideas such as forcing chatbots to remind users they are not human and barring the use of AI to make nonconsensual pornography. The most significant regulations have been passed in California and New York, but there is pressure in Republican-led states too.
