More Layoffs Hit FL As Federal Job Numbers Fall

The state of Florida has reported 2,791 layoffs in 2026, largely due to the closure of all of its remaining Bahama Breeze restaurants. This is according to the state's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification law, which requires companies with 100 employees or more to give workers 60 days' notice of a job loss affecting 50 people or more at a single site. The layoffs in Florida were a 36 percent decrease from the 4,373 announced in 2025. The decrease in jobs was largely attributed to strike activity in health care, which led to the rise of the federal unemployment rate to 4.5% in January.
